#tbt: Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire

I love it when low-wage workers hulk out and catch bad guys.
Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1)I was a little scared off at first by the lukewarm reviews, but I always see Ms McGuire's name next to other authors I really enjoy, so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did.

It was a solid private eye crime mystery all the way through; while magic occurs in this universe, not once was it used as a quick-fix plot device. Other reviewers had complained that October is a dull heroine, but I found her to be delightfully normal as opposed to some Wonder Woman Mary Sue trope. She gets shot at a lot, beat up a lot, and while she has some magical abilities, fighting skills don't appear to be among them. She gets ahead by her intelligence and ability to wheel and deal with heavy hitters, and occasionally worries about making her rent payment. My kind of heroine.
